New data released by the British Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) shows that the record of renewable energy was completely broken last year, because renewable energy produced nearly 37% of Britain's electricity.
According to the data, in 2019, the power generation of renewable energy in the UK reached a record high, breaking 36.9%, of which wind power contributed 20%, which is also the highest proportion in the history of wind power, including 9.9% of onshore wind power and 9.9% of offshore wind power.
The wind power generation in 2019 will be 32TWh. By the end of 2019, the renewable energy power generation capacity had increased to 47.4GW, up 6.9% year-on-year.
Overall, low-carbon power generation will increase in 2019, ensuring that renewable energy and nuclear energy together account for a record 54.2%. Nuclear power provides 17.4%, natural gas provides 40.9%, and coal provides only 2.1%.
The growth of renewable energy has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 3.6% compared with 2018 and nearly 28% since 2010.
The Minister of Energy Kwasi Kwarteng welcomed the news, especially during the uncertain period caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the UK.
Kwasi Kwarteng said, "These new data show that the UK has made extraordinary progress in tackling climate change, with emissions falling by 45% since 1990. With the record breaking level of renewable energy generation on the grid, we can make full use of these efforts in the next few months and years."
In general, the electricity production in the UK has declined slightly compared with that in 2018, generating 324TWh in 2019. Energy efficiency measures contributed to this, but were also offset by the transition to electric vehicles and electric heating.
Melanie Onn, Deputy Executive Director of RenewableUK, said that these data showed that the energy system was undergoing tremendous changes. "Low cost renewable energy is in the leading position. As we establish a modern energy system, this trend will continue, shifting from fossil fuels to net zero emissions as soon as possible. In addition to wind energy, we will also use innovative technologies such as renewable hydrogen and avionics, and expand battery storage."
"Low cost renewable energy is the core of the government's energy strategy. As our domestic supply chain expands and we continue to seize billions of pounds of global export opportunities, our industry will grow rapidly in the next few years."
At the same time, the British National Grid survey found that 48.5% of the country's electricity came from zero carbon energy in the whole 12 months of 2019, including wind farms, solar energy and nuclear energy, as well as energy imported from the undersea Internet.
During the same period, 43% of electricity in the UK came from fossil fuels, mainly natural gas, and the remaining 8.5% was generated from biomass.
