Anglo American, a diversified mining company, said on Friday that South Africa's 21 day blockade to curb the spread of the coronavirus will have a significant impact on iron ore and coal guidance.
Anglo American, founded in South Africa more than 100 years ago, said that the output of its Kumba iron ore mine will decline by as much as 3 million tons this year, while the output of steam coal will decline by 1.5 to 2 million tons.
Anglo American pointed out that the railway and port logistics infrastructure supporting the export of these two commodities is expected to continue to provide services for the business within three weeks.
In addition, Anglo American also reduced the production of platinum and diamonds. The Venice Diamond Mine, operated by De Beers, a subsidiary of the Group, will operate at a level where the number of employees has dropped to 25%. Anglo American said that Mogalakwena and Mototolo Platinum Mines, the largest palladium mines outside Russia, continued to operate with reduced labor and production, but further plans were needed.
The three platinum production plants (Amandelbult, Modikwa and Kroondal), Mortimer and Waterfall smelters will be maintained.
Anglo American said that so far, most of its main businesses in other countries have not been materially affected. However, it extended the construction progress of Quellaveco Copper Mine in Peru and suspended the recently acquired Woodsmith Polyhalite Project in Britain.
